About
The Bitterroot Magazine is a student-run publication at Montana State University, dedicated to showcasing the rich diversity of stories and voices that make Montana unique. Published by the MSU English Department and created by students, our magazine highlights the experiences, history, and culture of the Treasure State, with an emphasis on the themes that shape our everyday lives.
Much like the Bitterroot flower itself, our publication endures the hardships of the long, cold Montana winters and returns each spring, blooming more vibrant than before. The scientific name, Lewis rediviva, translates to "brought back to life," and just like the flower, we return annually to share the remarkable stories of the people of Montana. As the land thaws, we aim to uncover and tell the stories of those who thrive in this rugged landscape—stories that are as enduring and vibrant as the Bitterroot itself.
Through compelling features and in-depth articles, the Bitterroot covers a wide range of topics including:
Food & Agriculture: Celebrating the heart of Montana’s economy and culture, from local farms to innovative food movements.
Communities: Exploring the vibrant towns and tight-knit rural communities that define the state’s spirit.
History: Unearthing Montana’s past and examining its enduring legacy.
Arts & Culture: Showcasing the creative forces that thrive in the Big Sky State, from visual arts to music, theater, and beyond.
Research: Highlighting groundbreaking academic research and discoveries happening at Montana State University and throughout the state.
Outdoors: Capturing the breathtaking landscapes and outdoor adventures that make Montana a destination like no other.
As a student-run magazine, Bitterroot not only offers a platform for emerging writers, photographers, and artists but also fosters a deep connection with the local culture, environmental awareness, and a sense of pride in what makes Montana home.
Join us as we tell the stories of the people, places, and passions that make this state truly remarkable.
